Here we go, we start it off with a blast :

Here's PRIDES!

This Glasgow trio was tipped by their fellow Glaswegians CHVRCHES to become the next (epic) pop band of 2013 and together with them and Hudson Mohawk they are the setting example that the UK still bursts of sparkling electronic pop talent!

Started as a duo under the name of Midnight Lion, Stuart and Lewis added Mr. Callum to their band and they became PRIDES.

At the moment they only released one song Out of The Blue, but already with the bombastic opening drums, MGMT worthy, together with the bagpipe synths you feel the song bursting open. This is almost symphonic-synth pop with a damn fine layered production behind it!

And thanks to the shifting rhythms and the mature vocals this song becomes catchy without becoming mainstream!

Definitely a band to look out for! On a festival near you this summer, for sure!

Sliding down on the map of Great Britain also the temperature and moods in music become more chill and cold but never without the real emotions of the heart, so let's go for tea with lo-fi electronic producer and artist DEPTFORD GOTH.

His life reads almost like a lyrical superhero story : school teacher by day but RnB inspired singer-ballad-writer by night.

I just discovered Daniel Woolhouse through his new (full) album Life After Deffo, in which deffo is the abbreviated slang for definitely. And with this the tone of the album is set...the feeling and state of post-certainty.

With bands as Active Child, How to dress well and Rhye, Deptford Goth connects well with his more etherical approach of soft-mumbled lullabies and love songs.

The songs are all carefully backed-up with beautiful orchestrations ranging from horns and harp-like strings to muffled rhythms and a firecracker-beat box, all together floating in between the real and synthetic, as Daniel describes it himself with his soft and soothing (James Blake-kinda) voice.

This is the kind of album where every listener will claim one song to himself as the they all feel and sound like pages out of the blue-ish diary of Mr. Woolhouse.

Maybe not the spring-album you were waiting for, but more the late afternoon-gazing-into-the-sunset kind of music!

DEPTFORD GOTH is in concert at Les Nuit Botanique in Brussels on 13/05 in the museum room. We are giving away 3x2 tickets to this concert, so tune in to our radioshow on FM BRUSSEL !

If you are unable to listen on Tuesday night at 20:00, you can download the program here the day after. (and listen to the previous programs)

See you next month!

Deer du Bois on FM Brussel VII : Autre ne Veut - John Grant

Smooth and soft, hard and rough, this week we go pop, but the kind that will make you move into all kind of places, intimately close or anxiously far away...like the 80s and 90s!

We start with Autre Ne Veut, the alter ego of Arthur Ashin, a Brooklyn based artist/singer/producer.

He's been evolving from soft RnB-infused vocal pop to a more mature and striking sound, bringing together all the good stuff pop is all about! (think female choirs, falsetto voice-moments,...)

On his recently released debut album "Anxiety" his references to the very fragile and dark songs by bands like How To Dress Well are completely gone and the very bright rays of optimism are shining out of almost every song.

In his musical style he has boosted the slow back beats from the chillwave he came from, to a much more moving-and-pumping-up-the-volume level by combining the avantgarde RnB elements with a big dose of indie-pop/rock. Even the personal and close to the body lyrics can not make you stop moving, not even during the ballads. His energetic voice just won't let you.

Anxiety is out on Mexican Summer and he's touring as we speak! So that's why we are deligthed to annouce that Autre Ne Veut will be performing in Brussels at Madame Moustache on Friday 19 April with the also amazing Belgian pop-noir act Children of the Palace as support act! So come early for a whole muscial must-hear night organised by Subbacultcha! And even more good news : we are giving away 2x2 tickets for this concert, so listen to our radio show or go to our win-page !

Check out here the first single of Autre Ne Veut's new album : Counting, in which he gets a vocal back-up by Mykki Blanco!

And then we go deep, rough but also gentle inside the mind and soul of a great bearded man : John Grant.

Starting his career as an alternative rocker in the Denver-scene, John Grant went solo in 2010 to become a singer-songwriter.

On his criticaly acclaimed and prizewinning debut album Queen of Denmark, that he recorded together with folk-rock band Midlake, he tried to write off his personal demons and his struggling with alcohol and drug addictions, but also the coming to terms with his sexuality.

While touring with his first album he arrived in Ireland where his music got the attention of Sinead O'Conner who covered one of his songs and who is doing some backing vocals on Pale Green Ghosts.

In the mean while he performed with Hercules & Love Affair and his music was featured in the gay movie Weekend.

All this experience got him eager to make another album and he felt the time was ready to add something extra to his music. By moving to Iceland he met Biggi Veira, the guy behind the electronic dance-act GusGus. Together they started working on the new album Pale Green Ghosts and they created an intruiging gem of an album.

John Grant's crooner-voice, you might know from his first album, is still there, but for some songs the electronic beats and synth effects lift up the sound to another level, referencing even bands as Yazoo and New Order.

Lyrically John still sings about his obsessions, memories of a lost lover (who left him) and even about being HIV-positif (Ernest Borgnine). So the beats haven't bleeped out the true feelings in the songs.

Listening to the album is like being inside John's head, sometimes you'll hear true singer-songwriter songs but then also you'll experience the feeling of drifting away into a neon-colored state of extasy. Moodswings turnend into a consistent and touching album!

Take a listen to Pale Green Ghosts and if you like what you hear, then you can go and see him in concert at Botanique in Brussels on April 18th! And because we love music and John Grant so much we are also giving away tickets for this concert. To win one of the 3x2 tickets, just tune in onto our FM Brussel radio show!

Here is one of the uppers on the album : Sensitive New Age Guy!
